about
Gotland! |
 |
| Throughout
history,
Gotland
has
been
a
major
trade
hub
in
the
Baltic
Sea.
Today
it
is
tourism,
agriculture
and
the
Gotland
university
college
that
the
economy
is
based
on. |
 |
| Gotland
is
a
wonderful
place
to
live.
It
is
calm
and
has
a
tranquil
pace
of
life.
The
nature
and
the
sea
are
both
ever
present.
The
distances
are
short
-
Gotland
is
176
km
from
north
to
south
and
50
km
wide
at
the
most. |

Always
Gotland |
 |
| There
is
a
lot
do
to
in
Gotland
during
the
summer.
Gotland
is
visited
by
people
with
summer
houses
on
the
island,
cruise
passengers,
ex-Gotlanders
with
their
families
visiting
friends
and
relatives,
but
also
by
independent
travellers
who
find
their
way
to
Gotland.
Most
people
who
visit
the
island
return,
as
it
leaves
few
people
untouched
by
its
rich
heritage,
nature
and
culture. |
 |
| Geographically
Gotland's
varied
climate
zones
are
similar
to
Earth
in
miniature,
therefore
its
possible
to
say
that
"the
whole
world
is
in
Gotland". |

| Gotland's
reputation
as
a
paradise
for
visitors
is
widespread
all
over
the
World.
You,
as
a
visitor
will
encounter
a
service-minded
island
and
islanders.
We
want
to
look
after
our
visitors
and
make
your
stay
here
memorable. |
 |
| The
tourist
board
and
everyone
working
within
the
tourism
sector
work
hard
to
give
you
value
for
money.
Gotland
has
a
lot
to
offer
and
its
easy
to
find
your
own
paradise
on
Gotland. |

you,

Gotland,
a

about
what
is
awaiting
you
here. |

 |
|
| Gotland
in
the
21st
century |
 |
| Gotland
is
an
island
with
fast,
reliable
and
frequent
communications
to
and
from
the
Swedish
mainland.
Fast
ferries
make
the
journey
in
just
over
3
hours.
Two
airlines
fly
to
Gotland,
from
Bromma
and
Arlanda
airport,
there
is
also
a
summer-only
service
available
from
Skavsta
airport
in
Nyköping. |
 |
| There
are
many
good
craftsmen
and
artists
on
Gotland,
working
with
materials
ranging
from
clay
to
metal.
There
are
also
a
good
number
of
skillful
web
designers. |

Fårö
-
Gotland
or
not? |
 |
| Fårö
is
it's
own
little
island
-
stretching
about
25
km
from
north
to
south
and
roughly
the
same
width.
Many
consider
Fårö
as
part
of
Gotland,
but
that
is
not
quite
correct.
Fårö
is
an
own
island
and
is
separated
from
Gotland
by
the
Strait
of
Fårö. |
 |
| Fårö
offers
a
beautiful
coastline
with
many
limestone
stacks
to
take
a
look
at.
One
of
the
more
famous
stacks
that
are
often
seen
on
postcards
from
Gotland
is
the
"Dog",
near
Gamle
hamn
on
Fårö.
|
 |
| The
best
way
to
find
it
is
to
ask
in
the
Tourist
Information
a
couple
of
kilometers
from
the
ferry
arrival
point.

 |
| Northern
Gotland |
 |
The
main
locality
in
the
northern
part
of
Gotland
is
Slite,
the
distance
from
Visby
is
depending
on
what
road
you
take,
ranging
from
31-
35
km
northeast
of
Visby.

Cementa,
an
industry
refining
limestone
are
situated
there
and
they
have
limestone
quarries
near
Slite
as
well.
Northern
Gotland
has
a
barren
nature
with
a
lot
of
moorlands.
There
are
also
some
forests
along
the
coast.

Hall
and
Hallshuk
on
the
northernmost
cape
of
Gotland
is
a
haven
whereto
many
return
year
after
year.

Around
the
village
Hall
there
are
some
farms
and
in
the
village
itself
there
are
approximately
ten
families
living
all
year
round.
By
the
fishing
harbour
of
Hallshuk
there
are
a
few
permanent
residents
as
well,
while
the
other
houses
are
owned
by
holiday
makers
that
contribute
to
the
old
fishing
village.

The
fishing
harbour
in
Hallshuk
is
one
of
the
most
visited
places
in
northern
Gotland
along
with
Fårö,
Fårösund
and
the
Stone
Coast
with
Bläse
limestone
museum.

Valleviken,
Kyllaj
and
Hellvi
are
small
localities
north
of
Slite.
There
are
stacks
at
Valleviken
and
just
before
Valleviken
you
can
visit
the
island
Furillen.
There
was
once
a
limestone
quarry
on
Furillen
-
a
disused
factory
and
a
pile
of
stone
is
all
that
reminds
of
the
former
activities
here.

Furillen
is
popular
with
the
locals
that
want
to
be
on
a
beach
a
little
more
secluded
than
what
is
the
case
at
Tofta
beach
and
at
Sudersand
in
Fårö.
At
the
cozy
Kyllaj
beach
there
is
a
pier
with
diving
tower
for
the
adventurous
bather. |

| Central
Gotland |
 |
| The
main
town
of
central
Gotland
is
Romakloster,
located
15
km
east
of
Visby.
Further
to
the
east
are
Östergarnslandet
and
Ljugarn. |
 |
| Ljugarn
hosts
a
small
hotel
and
a
pension,
along
with
a
beach
-
one
of
the
finest
in
Gotland.
Ljugarn
has
a
long
history
as
a
spa
resort
for
bathers
and
sunbathers.
In
Östergarnslandet
there
is
a
lot
to
see,
everything
from
stacks
to
nature
reserves.
|
 |
| Högklint,
Västerhejde,
Västergarn,
Tofta
and
Klintehamn
are
localities
on
the
west
side
of
Gotland,
south
of
Visby.
Högklint
offers
breathtaking
views
over
Visby
and
the
Baltic
sea
and
you
can
visit
Robber
Lilja's
cave
on
top
of
the
hill.
|
 |
| Below
the
hill
Högklint
is
Fridhem
with
a
small
but
popular
café,
open
May
-
August.
Further
south
towards
Tofta
beach
and
the
camp
site
you
will
find
the
petite
fishing
harbour
Gnisvärd,
surrounded
by
lush
foliage.
The
fishing
harbour
is
one
of
the
best
retained
in
Gotland.
|
 |
| Southern
Gotland |
 |
| Hemse
is
the
main
locality
on
southern
Gotland
and
even
though
it
is
small,
it
has
a
town
feeling
about
it.
There
is
a
good
selection
of
shops
and
a
folk
high
school,
a
public
indoor
swimming
pool
and
a
park.
Hemse
also
hosts
a
cozy
shopping
street
where
there
is
a
bank. |
 |
| Further
south
is
Burgsvik
and
south
of
Burgsvik
you
come
to
Hoburgsgubben,
located
as
far
to
the
south
as
you
can
get
in
Gotland.
A
short
distance
northeast
of
Hoburgsgubben
is
southern
Gotland's
stack
area,
called
Holmhällar.
Northwest
of
Hoburgen
you
will
find
Näsudden,
with
several
wind
turbines.
Bathing
beaches
and
cozy
bays
are
plentiful
wherever
you
are,
its
never
far
to
the
sea.
|
 |
To
live
in
Gotland
is
to
enjoy
life
to
the
full.
The
pace
is
calm
and
distances
short.
If
you
want
to
live
here
for
a
longer
period
of
time
you
can
rent
a
flat,
build
your
own
house
or
buy
your
own
limestone
house.
Everything
is
possible
in
Gotland.
