| Visby,
the
medieval
Hanseatic
town
in
the
Baltic
Sea |
 |
| Visby
has
a
lot
to
offer
it's
visitors.
It
feels
like
a
small
city.
In
the
summer,
Visby
is
a
metropolis,
comparable
to
the
tourist
destinations
like
Palma
de
Mallorca,
Copenhagen
and
Stockholm. |
 |
There
is
always
something
happening
in
Visby,
not
just
in
the
summer

Once
Visby
-
Always
Visby |
 |
|
| The
Botanic
Garden |
 |
Visby
hosts
a
wonderful
botanic
garden,
functioning
like
an
oasis
and
a
green
lunge
for
the
whole
of
the
town.

The
gardens
display
an
abundance
of
trees,
shrubs
and
flowers,
not
commonly
growing
and
thriving
so
far
north.
This
is
due
to
the
fact
that
the
sea
around
Gotland
contributes
to
a
milder
climate. |

Visby
inner
city
and
ring
wall |
 |
| Visby
inner
city
is
surrounded
by
northern
Europe's
most
well-preserved
ring
wall.
The
construction
of
the
wall
started
as
early
as
in
the
12th
century,
and
it's
main
task
was
to
protect
Visby
and
its
burghers
from
attacks,
both
from
the
Gotland
inland
and
the
sea. |
 |
| The
inner
city
of
Visby
is
so
well-preserved
that
it
was
admitted
into
the
UNESCO
list
of
World
heritage
list,
to
be
kept
and
maintained
for
coming
generations.
The
town
has
both
medieval
houses
and
more
modern
building
that
together
form
a
comprehensive
picture. |
 |
| Artists
and
crafters |
 |
| There
are
many
skillful
artists
and
crafters
both
in
Visby
and
in
the
Gotland
countryside. |
 |
| In
Visby
there
is
the
gold
smith
Odd
Magnusson,
working
in
the
well-renowned
"Guldsmedjan".
Viklau
is
the
home
of
Lisen
Hallgren,
a
skillful
artisan
restoring
old
windows.
Erik
Olsson
is
another
well-known
Gotland
artist. |

| Visby
in
general |
 |
| The
university
college
of
Visby
is
located
by
Visby
harbour,
just
outside
Almedalen.
The
Historical
museum
you
will
find
on
Strandgatan
in
the
inner
city.
The
town
is
scattered
with
cafes
and
cozy
restaurants
with
local
and
international
cuisine,
in
the
summer
there
is
even
a
restaurant
with
medieval
cuisine. |
 |
| There
are
art
galleries
and
a
theatre.
On
Adelsgatan
there
are
all
sorts
of
shops
and
boutiques,
restaurants,
cafes
and
a
hotel.
The
Main
Square
in
the
middle
of
town,
reminds
of
a
medieval
market
in
the
summer.
|
 |
| Don't
miss
the
atmospheric
ruins.
North
of
the
Main
Square
is
the
Saint
Maria
cathedral,
that
few
want
to
miss
visiting
Visby. |
 |
| Visby
outside
the
wall |
 |
| Visby
outside
the
ring
wall
is
not
like
any
Swedish
town.
Within
3
kilometres
from
the
city
centre
there
are
four
fine
sandy
beaches
with
camping
facilities. |
 |
|
The
more
modern
buildings
in
Visby
are
deliberately
designed
to
amalgamate
with
the
older
houses
and
the
unique
wall.
Visby
hospital
is
a
good
example
on
modern
design
well
adapted
to
fit
in
an
older
milieu
and
unique
nature.

We
in
Visby
would
like
to
wish
you
welcome
to
visit
our
town
and
our
island.
We
would
like
to
do
what
we
can
to
ensure
you
get
the
most
out
of
your
stay
in
Gotland.
Welcome
to
Visby
-
the
medieval
town
in
the
middle
of
the
Baltic
Sea.
